Our Story

The Skills Gap was founded by James Hyde, a sustainability and partnerships professional with over a decade of experience supporting the NHS, universities, government departments, and global businesses. His work has focused on helping organisations identify and close green skills gaps through scalable training and strategic collaboration.

That experience shaped the creation of The Skills Gap, a consultancy built on the belief that sustainability change starts with people. Our approach blends learning and behaviour change to make sustainability practical, measurable, and engaging, so every role can contribute with confidence.

We exist to help organisations and their people move from awareness to action, building capability and confidence for a more sustainable future.

Who We Are

At The Skills Gap, we help organisations and their people turn sustainability ambition into confident, everyday action.

We start by understanding where you are, your goals, challenges, and current level of knowledge, before designing learning experiences that fit around busy schedules. Our approach blends insight, interaction, and reflection to build both capability and confidence, creating a clear path from first steps to measurable impact.

Everything we do is shaped by one principle: change only lasts when people feel part of it. By making sustainability learning practical, relevant, and rewarding, we help teams not just learn about change, but lead it.

Meet Our Associates

We work with a trusted network of trainers, facilitators, and subject-matter experts who bring specialist insight to every programme.

For organisations that want to go deeper, we also collaborate with consultants during an exploration stage — a diagnostic process that helps uncover underlying challenges, whether they relate to capability, capacity, or culture. This optional stage ensures any solution we design targets the right problem and delivers meaningful, lasting impact.

Whether you choose Essentials, Applied Practice, or Professional Recognition, our associates ensure your organisation receives the right expertise and support at every step of its sustainability journey.
